Shanghai Pudong International Airport
Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG)
The Shanghai Pudong International Airport is one of China's busiest airport hubs. Located 19 miles east of Shanghai, this airport handled over 40 million passengers in just one year, which made it the third busiest facility in China and the 20th in the world. Currently there are two passenger terminals with a Railway Station located at the center. Inside each terminal travellers will find a variety of amenities and accommodations as well as duty-free shopping.
Before the Pudong Airport was constructed, Shanghai and China relied solely on the Hongqiao International Airport. Finally in the 1990s the Hongqiao Airport could no longer expand to meet incoming demands and the development of Pudong International Airport commenced. The first phase of construction started in 1997 and was opened in 1999. From there, a second runway was constructed in 2005 to accommodate the travellers for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In 2011 the Pudong International Airport got their approval from the Chinese government to expand two more runways and develop a new fifth runway for a total of $4.65 billion Yuan. The constructed is expected to be finished in 2015, which will double the airport's capacity capabilities.

Surrounding Area and Travel Tips
Shanghai Pudong International can have extensive queue wait times during peak travel hours. Not all staff members in the airport are bilingual; therefore, travellers can find it difficult to communicate with staff. Most staff, however, are friendly and capable of pointing a person in the right direction if need be.
Out of the airport travellers can take advantage of the extensive taxi networks located within Shanghai, China. Though there are numerous bike lanes, it is important to understand the rules of the road in China before attempting to travel on the chaotic, bustling streets on a bicycle. Streets are extremely crowded in Shanghai and jaywalking is extremely dangerous; therefore, tourists should always wait to cross the roads.
