Marseille Provence Airport (MRS)

As the primary airport located within the Provence region, the Marseille Provence Airport is located just 16 miles from the city of Marseille. This airport operates as the main travel hub for famous French resorts and takes on over 7 million passengers each year. The airport recently constructed a new terminal that is dedicated to budget flights only and some passengers have commented that it has a "budget" feel to it as well.

History

The Marseille Provence Airport was one of the first main ports opened in France between 1920 and 1930. It was mainly used to fly boats to and from destinations and it served as the main hub for PanAm. In 1989, the airport suffered a suffered from a severe crash that killed three crew members of a cargo plane. There were no passengers harmed or on board at the time.

Amenities and Services

*Financial - Currency exchange, ATMs and banks are located throughout the airport.
* Luggage - A wrapping facility is located in the departure terminals and lost and found is on the ground floor at Hall 1. Porter and luggage trolley services are available as well.
* Business - There are currently four different business options that include meeting rooms, conference centers, catering and workstations for business travellers. Photocopiers and fax machines are also available for an additional fee.
* Internet - Free Wi-Fi is available in Halls 1, 3 and 4.
* Retail - There are not many shops located in the facility. A few duty-free stores and souvenir shops are located on the first levels and newspaper stands are located throughout.
* Food - There are only 10 restaurants located in the airport that have local cuisine as well as a Haagen-Dazs ice cream vendor.
* Other - The airport offers additional services including gaming rooms, showers, welcome services, VIP lounges, vending machines and first-aid.

Parking

The Marseille Provence Airport offers short and long-term parking in eight different lots.

For those who need to travel in and out of town, the Vitrolles Marseille Provence Train Station is the perfect option. Running trains throughout the day, directly into Marseille, it is the perfect way to get around. Currently the train operates at three trips per hour to and from the airport into the center of Marseille.

Taxis and busses are also available for travellers who want to avoid the busy lines and crowds of the train. Buses will take about 25 minutes to get into town and taxis are available 24/7, but are costly.

Travel Tips

Those traveling on a budget to the Marseille Provence Airport will be forced into the budget terminal. This terminal has been reported to have a "budget" feel, limited seating and extensive wait times. Therefore, anyone traveling into Marseille on budget flights should expect longer wait periods and uncomfortable seating.
