Naples International Airport

Naples International Airport (NAP)

Naples Airport is a fairly small airport located in the suburbs of the city, only 4 miles from the center. It is considered to be the main arrival location for all of Southern Italy. It is also called Naples Capodichino, after the suburb in which it is located. The airport's official name is Ugo Niutta, and its code is NAP.

This airport serves five and a half million passengers per year. It serves 19 international destinations, 11 domestic ones, and 50 charter ones. The majority of the flights, though, are within Europe.
The airport is divided into Terminals 1 and 2. Terminal 1 handles the commercial flights and Terminal 2 handles the charter flights. The terminals are within walking distance of each other. There are 52 check-in desks in Terminal 1 and 15 in Terminal 2. There are 15 gates.

History

The airport was established in 1910. It was very important worldwide during World War I and II, when it was thought of as a military airport for the Allies. The United States Air Force used it frequently.
In 1950, the airport returned primarily to commercial flights. It has been run by the same management since 1980. In 1995, a twenty year development plan was started. In 1998, the 'Galleria Napoli', a new shopping area was opened.

The airport is still used as a military base in addition to the commercial uses.
