Rome Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport

Rome Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport (FCO)

The Rome Fiumicino Airport is the largest airport in Italy, and the only airport in Italy to hold international status. It is the 25th busiest airport in the world with over 35 million passengers annually, but will be capable of handling 55 million once all of the renovations are completed.

It is part of two airports that are known as the Rome Airport System. It is located about 20 miles from central Rome. It is named after the great Leonardo da Vinci. The official code is FCO.

There are many terminal buildings: Terminal A, Terminal AA, Terminal B, Terminal C, and Satellite West Terminal. Some handle domestic flights, others handle international ones, and some even handle transatlantic flights. There are four runways in the airport.

The Rome Fiumicino Airport was created on January 15, 1961 to replace the Ciampino airport. This airport remains in operation, though, for charter and domestic flights.

The airport was started with only two runways. A third runway was added not long after. It continued to expand rapidly over the years. The buildings were completely upgraded during the 1990s. In 2000, Terminal A was added. In 2004, a new cargo terminal was built. There have even been more improvements since 2007 to the airport, which continues to grow.
