Auckland International Airport
The Auckland International Airport, abbreviated AKL, is also called the Mangere Airport. It is called the Mangere Airport because it is actually not located in Auckland, but in Mangere, which is a suburb about 13 miles south of the center of Auckland.
It is the largest airport in New Zealand, seeing over 13 million passengers each year. The airport is the central hub for Air New Zealand and one of the country's most important assets, bringing in $14 billion to the economy every single year. The airport is the fourth busiest in Australia. It was voted the 8th best airport in the world in 2011.
The site of the airport today used to be an airfield owned by the Auckland Aero Club, built in 1928. In 1960 work was started to make the airport Auckland's main public airport. the first flight left the new airport in 1965.
An international terminal was added in 1977. The airport had a major upgrade in 2005 that separated arriving and departing passengers in 2005. This was a response to the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
* Dining - Cafes and restaurants
* Currency exchange
* Shopping - Duty free in the International terminal
There is a lot of parking at the Auckland International Airport, depending on why you are using the airport and how long you will be traveling. Parking at the airport is monitored 24 hours a day.
The business express parking is closest to the domestic terminal of the airport. This is covered parking with a fully covered walkway taking you right from your car to the terminal. Of course, this parking is higher-priced.
There are a few different types of short term parking available to you. You can opt for short term covered parking, with the first 10 minutes being free. This is perfect for people picking someone up or dropping them off. There is also uncovered parking for short term passengers. The first ten minutes of parking in these areas are free of charge.
There is also long term parking for customers. There are some uncovered long term spaces available to passengers in one lot, and more located in another area a little further away. Covered long-term parking is also available. It is a 2-5 minute walk from the terminal.
There is a small premium uncovered lot very close to the check-in area that is especially good for larger vehicles because it has very wide spaces. Payment for this lot is by credit card only. In addition, there is a longer term parking lot that is not covered located a little further away. This lot has a shuttle every 15 minutes and a customer waiting lounge.
Getting to the rest of New Zealand is no trouble at all. If you want to go right to a hotel, there are many hotels that offer free transportation to you from the airport for a little savings. If you are not going straight to a hotel, there are rental cars, buses, taxis and shuttles all available at your disposal.
