Wellington International Airport
Wellington International Airport (WLG)
Wellington International Airport, abbreviated WLG, gets its name from its location to Wellington, which is the capital of New Zealand. It is actually located in a suburb of the city called Rongotai, which is why it is also sometimes called Rongotai airport. The airport is owned by Wellington International Airport Limited.
This airport is the third busiest in New Zealand. It handles a little over 5 million passengers each year. The airport has many links to new Zealand and Australia as well.
Wellington International Airport started in 1929. It actually opened in 1935 for passengers, but was closed down only two years later because of its original grass runway. The terminal was moved in 1956 to its current location. It was officially reopened in 1959 much closer to the center of Wellington, which helped the growth of the airport.
The original domestic terminal was not in good condition and was upgraded in 1986 by Air New Zealand. Over the years, the airport has released plans to expand, but often abandoned them for various reasons. Alternate sites for the airport have been considered as recently as 1992. Renovations finally did happen in 1999 with a new terminal.
