Lanzarote Airport

General Description of Lanzarote Airport (ACE)

Lanzarote Airport is just about 5 kilometers to the southwest of Arrecife town. Because it serves millions of tourists each year, the airport plays an important role on the tourism development of Lanzarote. There are regular flights connecting passengers to other airports in Europe. Germany and the UK account for around 71% of its international traffic. The rest comes from other European Union countries. Domestic traffic covers just three destinations, namely, Gran Canaria, Tenerife Norte, and Madrid-Barajas.

Airport History

The need to build an aerodrome in the island emerged in the 1930s. Initially, the site was developed to cater to the Spanish Air Force. When the aerodrome started accepting civil traffic in 1946, further development and improvements were carried out. In March 1970, the construction of a new passenger terminal was completed. During the same month, the airport began facilitating domestic and international flights. In 1999, the old terminal became Terminal 2 and was designated for inter-island and national flights. A newly built passenger terminal became Terminal 1 for international flights.

Airport Accommodations

There are numerous shops that shopaholic travelers can check out in the airport. For the gastronomic necessities, there are many bars, four snack bars, and an ice cream parlor in designated areas of the airport. Five restaurants are serving meals, including popular fast food chains Burger King and Pizza Hut. In the Departures Hall are a money exchange office and several ATMs. The entire Lanzarote Airport is a free Wi-Fi zone.

Parking & Transportation

The front of the terminal is where a parking area is located. It can accommodate up to 1,100 cars at a time. The first 30 minutes of parking is free. After that, a e0.50 fee is charged for the next 30 minutes and/or e0.95 per hour. For travelers who opt to take public transportation, the Arrivals Hall is where bus line 4 terminal is, where there is a bus leaving every 30 minutes going to major destinations in Lanzarote. Taxis can be hired near the same hall. There are also designated counters for car rental firms.

Airport Security

Just like in all other Spanish airports, security is quite tight in Lanzarote Airport. Safety and security is ensured by the Security Forces and private security guards. Standard security check is performed on all passengers prior to allowing them to get into boarding areas. Luggage and other things are subject to X-ray inspection.

Surrounding Places to Stay

The nearest hotels can be found in Puerto del Carmen. Those are Beatriz Playa and Sol Lanzarote. Many travelers also opt to stay in the Arrecife Gran Hotel in Arrecife.
