EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL) is located at a close proximity of several regions including Basel in Switzerland (6 km), Mulhouse in France (14km), Freiburg in Germany (70 km) and therefore forms a crossroad between these three counties. The operations of the airport are controlled jointly by Switzerland and France and residents of Germany, France and Switzerland have the right to use the airport without any cross boundaries restrictions.
The initial plan for the construction date back to the 1930s which were later interrupted due to the Second World War. It was in 1946 that the authorities began considering the construction of airport at a distance of 4 km from the northern part of Blotzheim. In the same year construction was started and on 8th May 1946 the airport officially started its operations. Since then the airport has gone considerable enlargement. The official name of the airport was coined in the year 1987.
Internet kiosks are available throughout the airport along with USB points and ATM machines. Although the airport does not offer conference facilities, telephone booths are readily available. Photocopying machines are placed at different terminals to aid passengers while the Wi-Fi service is available throughout the airport at reasonable prices. The airport offers restaurant at level 5 with special deals while bars and cafes are located both in public sector and passenger zone at various levels offering cross cultural specialties for food lovers. A total of 9 shops are present within arrival and departure zone that offer an array of good ranging from magazines to accessories while duty free shops offer goods at discounted prices.
Parking & Transportation
The car parking lot is extensive depending on the route whereas the French side and Swiss side parking does not result in a charge if the driver is on seat. Car parking charges vary according to the parking time with a minimum of 1 minute charge to a maximum of four days charge. The airport does not offer a railway station but passengers can get a railway ticket from the ticket office located near Swiss arrivals sections. Taxis and busses are readily available outside terminals to serve passengers.
Normal security protocols are followed at the airport, including screening of electronics (such as laptops) and removal of shoes and belts.
