Albuquerque International Sunport, with the code ABQ, is located just 3 miles from the business district in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It serves the Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas. This airport is the largest in the state. It sees nearly 6 million passengers every year. It handles both international and domestic commercial flights.

A lot of money has gone into the construction of this airport. It has created many jobs and supports the state's economy very well with the income from the airport. It has created over 3,000 jobs for the state today.

The airport is made of three terminals, the third of which is actually called Terminal B. This is a very new terminal compared to the other two.

History

The Albuquerque International Airport was officially started in 1937 after a proposal was made that Albuquerque build a public airport for the city. Before, it had been served by two private airports.

Originally called Albuquerque Municipal Airport, it was officially opened in 1939. It was moved to the current site just a little away from the original in 1965. The airport has had two major expansions - one of these in 1989, and the other in 1996.

In 2002 a plan was started to make more improvements upon the airport. It is a much longer plan that involves several different steps. It included the creation of a third terminal for the airport. This is now called Terminal B.

Parking

There are long and short term parking lots at the airport. The safe and well-lit parking lot is open 24 hours a day. Parking can be paid for by credit card upon exiting the parking lot. The long term parking lot has 500 spaces available. There are over 350 additional long-term parking spaces a little away from the airport as well. These are debit card only self-pay spaces, but are still monitored the same as the other lots. This parking lot is north of the parking structure. There are special handicap spaces on the entire parking structure very close to the elevators for easy access to the terminal.

Surrounding Atmosphere

You can get into Albuquerque to see the sites and find a place to eat or stay in a variety of ways. You can take the bus or the commuter train. There is also a shuttle bus that can take you right into the city from the airport. This is provided by the airport. If you want to, you can call for a taxi as well. You can even take a bike if you like because the city is so close to the airport.

When you get into Albuquerque, there are many things to do and see. You can find great places to stay and enjoy activities for the family or for adults. There are also a wide variety of very good places that you can eat as well.
