History

In 1948, the US Congress approved a $13-million budget to fund two international airports in Alaska, one located in Anchorage and another in Fairbanks. Anchorage International Airport officially opened in 1953. When Alaska became the 49th state in January of 1959, it acquired ownership of the airport.

In the 1960s, the airport became a regular stop-over of several international airlines. Business at the airport only grew as the years passed, most especially during the Alaskan oil boom in the 1980s. The 1990s was a period of great expansion at the airport. In the year 2000, the airport was renamed Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in honor of Alaska's Senior US Senator. There was more construction in the years that followed. The airport most recently completed a runway reconstruction and lengthening in 2011.
