Buffalo Niagara International Airport

Buffalo Niagara International Airport

The Buffalo Niagara International Airport, abbreviated BNIA, is located in a city called Cheektowaga, in New York. It is named after the Buffalo - Niagara Falls area. The unique thing about this airport is that it serves a small part of Ontario, Canada in addition to the surrounding area in New York. It is the third busiest airport in the state.

The Buffalo Niagara International Airport was opened in 1926 under the name Buffalo Municipal Airport, with the first passenger flights starting the next year. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority took over the airport in 1959 and changed the name to the Greater Buffalo International Airport, starting a major remodel only two years later.

The expansion, though, was not large enough for the airport still. A second terminal was added in 1971, and another expansion was added six years after that. The original terminal building is no longer used as a terminal, but is a baggage area.

In 1991, it was decided that a new airport was to be built. Construction began in 1995 and finished in 1997. The new airport finally took on the name Buffalo-Niagara International Airport. It was again expanded in 1999 and 2006 to make more room for all of the passengers in the airport.

The short-term parking garage is closest to the terminal building. Long-term parking is within walking distance, though you can still take advantage of the free shuttles if you prefer not to walk to the terminal building.

There are two different long term parking lots. Both are designed for longer trips, but the second of the two is much more affordable than the first. That way, parking can be selected based upon price for long-term passengers. There is also Preferred Long-Term parking as well, which of course comes at a slightly higher price.

There is free handicapped parking very close to the terminals in the short term parking lot for mobility impaired passengers. Presentation of a handicapped parking permit is required. There is also luggage assistance available 24 hours a day if needed.
