Oakland International Airport

Oakland International Airport (OAK)

Oakland International Airport is a public airport located 4 miles from downtown Oakland in CA and is one of three international airports in the San Francisco Bay area. It is often used an alternative to San Francisco International Airport and is known to have a high on-time percentage. Oakland Airport provides domestic service as well as flights to Mexico and Europe. The airport is a focus city for Southwest Airlines and Allegiant Air.

In 1927, partly due to the fanfare of the Spirit of St. Louis flight, the site of the future airport was purchased. The longest runway in the world (at that time) was constructed in a record 21 days, and the airport was dedicated by Charles Lindbergh. In 1937, Amelia Earhart left the airport on her final flight.

In 1943, the airport was taken over (for a few years) by the U.S. Armed Forces, who used the location to build a naval air station and airlift base during the war. The airport was also used during the Vietnam War to shuttle military back and forth from Asia.

In 1962, a new terminal was opened as part of a multi-million dollar expansion. In 2004, more renovations began as the airport added new gates, a baggage claim facility, parking structures and food and beverage concessions; in 2008 the project was completed.
Another upgrade is currently in the works to include larger restrooms, new flooring and new check-in areas.

In 2012, the airport celebrated its 85th Anniversary, the same year that Air Force One landed at the airport for the first time ever.
