Ontario International Airport

LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT)

LA/Ontario International Airport (formerly Ontario International Airport) is a mid-hub full service public and freight airport in San Bernardino County in Ontario, CA. The airport has over 110 daily flights and serves over 4 million travellers a year. Southwest is carries nearly half of passengers.

It is also the 15th busiest freight airport in the U.S., with several major freight carriers using the location because of its close proximity to Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors. UPS uses the airport as a gateway.

In 1923, the airport was constructed by a flight club (The Friends of Ontario Airport) who built a landing field on land that was leased from Union Pacific Railroad. In 1929, the city purchased 30 acres of land as and created the Ontario Municipal Airport, and in 1941 the city purchased more acreage and build additional runways. In 1943, the airport served as an Army Corps base during WWII.

In 1946, Ontario Municipal Airport was renamed to "Ontario International Airport" due to all the international cargo flights. In 1967, the cities of Ontario and Los Angeles entered into an agreement, making the airport part of the L.A. regional airport system.

In 1981, a new runway was built, and in 1998, the airport opened a new terminal.

In 2006, Aeromexico began servicing the only international flights from the airport - seasonal flights to Mexico. Also in 2006, Ontario International Airport was renamed LA/Ontario International Airport to avoid the confusion with Ontario, Canada.
