History

Salt Lake City International Airport began as a landing strip used for aerobatic flights in 1911. It became Woodward Field in the 1920s and was used by USPS for mail delivery service. Western Air Express, which later became Western Airlines, carried commercial passengers for the first time in 1926. In 1930, the airport was renamed Salt Lake City Municipal Airport and the administration building and first official terminal was constructed in 1933.

The years that followed saw a period of growth for the airport. In 1968, Western Airlines operated the first non-stop international flight from the facility and the airport was then renamed Salt Lake City International Airport. Further expansions and modifications were completed over the decades and a $1.8 billion redevelopment plan is currently under works.
