Air Canada moves regional cargo service to Halifax
October 11, 2005

Air Canada is transferring its cargo service to the Halifax International Airport and reducing its presence at the Greater Moncton International Airport.

The change, prompted by the airline's move to smaller regional passenger jets, will also se the elimination of some Air Canada management positions and cargo staff.

Moncton airport CEO Rob Robichaud said the overall amount of Air Canada freight was negligible, characterizing it as barely enough to fill his office.

This was the result of plane size; regional jets with little cargo room fly into Moncton while larger passenger jets continue to travel daily to the larger Halifax airport.

Mr. Robichaud said other airlines, such as Westjet and Canjet, and freight carriers account for the bulk of Moncton's cargo traffic.

Last year the airport handling 22,544 metric tonnes of cargo, up from 19,625 in 2003.
