Grantley Adams International is the Eastern Caribbean's central airport. Located just 10 miles south of the capital of Bridgetown, Barbados; Grantley Adams International takes travellers from all over the world including Canada, South America and Europe. Over the past 10 years the airport has received a much required cosmetic and technical upgrade. A second terminal was added to allow an area for secondary arrivals and departures. History
Originally named after the first prime minister of Barbados, the original Grantley Adams International Airport consisted of one runway strip on a grassy plain in the 1930s. In the 1960s the space was used for the HARP project between the United States and Canada. With the threat of the invasion by Grenada in 1983, the United States established the Regional Security System to protect their airport and it is still in use today. In 2000 a large expansion project was started and by 2007 the airport features an executive lounge area, business services, and larger runways for Airbus and Boeing planes.
