Bangkok International Airport, also sometimes known as Suvarnabhumi International Airport, is located about 15 miles north of Bangkok. The actual name refers to the golden kingdom, a region in Southeast Asia. This airport has 3 Terminals. This airport does not handle any domestic flights today because of overcrowding. It has the world's tallest freestanding control tower. Interestingly enough, it is the world's second most popular Instagram picture location. The airport is built on a watershed, so precautions have to be taken to prevent the airport from taking on water during flooding. History Bangkok International Airport is the second Bangkok airport that was constructed. It is very young and had a rocky start before becoming what it is today. Construction for this airport started in the early 1960s, and it took a long time to build. It was plagued by budget troubles and mistakes in construction. There were even some allegations of corruption during the construction of the airport. Shoppers were robbed and nothing was done about the crimes. Test flights began in 2005, and it finally officially opened in 2006. There were many flight difficulties and safety issues. Within a year, it experienced overcrowding problems and domestic flights were moved from the airport to remedy these problems. Short and long term parking is available at the airport. Short term parking is opposite the main terminal building. These buildings connect directly to the airport terminal. Parking for short term is slightly expensive. There are two other car parks as well as long term parking. These are located a little away from the main terminal building. Luckily, there is a shuttle service that can take you to the airport terminal.
