Information and Travel Guide for Copenhagen International Airport

Information and Travel Guide for Copenhagen International Airport
Copenhagen International Airport (CPH)

The Copenhagen International Airport, often referred to as Kastrup Airport, is one of the biggest airports located in Denmark. Since it serves most Nordic destinations throughout the world, it is also one of the busiest. Most flights that enter into the Copenhagen International Airport are operated by Scandinavian Airlines - though it is also a major hub for domestic flights too. Though it is exceptionally busy, it is one of the calmer airports according to tourists who frequent it.

History

The airport originally opened its doors in 1925 as one of the first private airports located in the world. At the time it had just one runway that was covered in grass. By 1936 a new terminal went under construction and was opened by 1939. The airport did not receive its first paved runway until 1941, when it needed to reconstruct its runway for larger passenger planes. In 1960, Terminal 2 was constructed and by 1998 Terminal 3 had been constructed as well. Today the airport handles over 18 million passengers each year and is expected to grow exponentially.

Services and Amenities

This exceptionally quiet and calm airport offers numerous amenities that keep travellers entertained during waits and layovers. Some common amenities include, but are not limited to:

  • Currency exchange and other financial services
  • Self-service luggage lockers
  • Business services located in the nearby Hilton hotel
  • Full-service internet kiosks available throughout the facility
  • Multiple shopping centers and high-end retailers that include Gucci and Ralph Lauren
  • Cafes, bistros, sit-down restaurants and fast food establishments are available

Parking

The Copenhagen International Airport offers over 8,000 parking stalls for travellers. With hourly, daily and long-term parking rates, travellers can take advantage of parking and flying out from this international hub. For those who do not want to drive their own vehicle there is the option of taking a local airport taxi service or local bus. The metro/subway line is located in the lower portion of Terminal 3 and goes in and out of the main city center. There is also the Kastrup Airport Station that is located in Terminal 3 that will run every 10 minutes and takes approximately 15 minutes to get to Copenhagen, including stops.

Surrounding Area

Once in the city there is a variety of things to do for families and individuals who are new to the area. As one of the oldest monarchy locations, Denmark offers numerous attractions that hold a valuable piece of European history. Those who are fans of the Little Mermaid can visit the statue that honours Hans Christian Andersen and his fabled story.

Those on honeymoon or in the area for a romantic getaway are encouraged to visit the Tivoli Gardens where they can escape to a quiet, Danish oasis.
Hotels, hostels and bed 'n' breakfasts are located throughout the Copenhagen area. Those on a budget will find cheaper hotel establishments located just outside the downtown area.
