Information and Travel Guide for New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport

Information and Travel Guide for New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport
New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL)

The busiest airport in India and the largest in South Asia, the Indira Gandhi International Airport saw over 35 million travellers in the past year. Named for Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, the airport has an area of 5,220 acres. Managed by Delhi International Airport Private Limited, the operators aim to make the airport a hugely significant international transit location.

History

Delhi has been home to an airport since 1930 when the Safdarjung Airport was constructed. This remained the primary airport for the city until increasing numbers of passengers led to a move to Palam Airport. That was 1962. Since then, the airport has only continued to see higher numbers as well as increasing usage by the military by the Indian Air Force.

Building an additional terminal during the 1970s helped the airport quadruple its capacity. And, in 1986, Terminal 2 was constructed and renamed to honor India's former Prime Minister. Since that time, modernization has continued in the airport's facilities and amenities to make it a truly global travel destination.

Amenities and Services

The Indira Gandhi International Airport is well-equipped for international travellers. Some of the amenities include:

  • Three connected hotels
  • Dozens of shops and restaurants
  • ATM and Currency Exchange locations
  • Travel Insurance
  • Executive lounges
  • Child care
  • Wi-Fi
  • Valet Parking
Parking and Transportation

The airport offers a multi-level parking garage outside Terminal 3. Short-term and long-term parking is available, starting at 70 rupees per hour.
If you are driving or taking a taxi to the airport, take the Delhi Gurgaon Expressway. You can also reach the airport by public transit. To travel by bus, board at the station outside the Centaur Hotel. Buses leave for the airport every 15 minutes. Traveling by rail is even simpler with the airport's new Airport Express which runs trains each 20 minutes from a number of stations.

Surrounding Area

Delhi is the capital of India, with a population of 250,000. A modern, multicultural city with a variety of historic and traditional holidays and parades, Delhi is also home to a thriving theater community. Its rising reputation has led to national events to commemorate religious and historic holidays. In a cyclical way, the increasing presence of these observances has further bolstered the city's reputation.

Visitors to Delhi will find themselves immersed in Indian culture as well as connected to the increasingly modern nation.
