Information and Travel Guide for Newark Liberty International Airport

Information and Travel Guide for Newark Liberty International Airport
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

Newark Liberty International Airport, abbreviated EWR, is a model of aviation history, as the nation's oldest commercial airport. The airport is owned by the city of Newark.

Newark is located 14 miles from Manhattan. Only part of it is actually in Newark. The other part is in Elizabeth. This location makes the airport very important for the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area. Appropriately, it was originally named the Newark Metropolitan Airport.

Newark Liberty International Airport is part of America's largest airport system. Newark alone sees nearly 35 million people every year.

History

Newark Liberty International Airport was established in 1928 on only 68 acres of land. This was the first commercial area in the New York City area. The airport was closed during the war to passengers when it was exclusively used for military operations.

The airport reopened in 1946. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey took over the airport two years later, adding quite a bit to it over the next couple of decades. In 1951-52, Newark was home to three major crashes, closing the airport for a time. Reopening did not prove to do much for the airport.

The airport began to conduct non-stop and international flights, which helped it grow. It took on the name Newark International Airport in the 1970s. Through the 1980s, the airport began to expand greatly, becoming one of the largest American airlines.

The airport met some trouble on September 11, 2001 when a plan leaving Newark crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back from a hijacking. This led to the change of the airport's name to its current Newark Liberty International Airport.

Newark Liberty International Airport has short term and long-term parking. There is also reserved parking available so you can purchase your parking ahead of time. Valet parking is available for a higher fee. Limited mobility assistance is also available.
