Ministro Pistarini International Airport is the main gateway into Argentina. With over 8.5 million passengers arriving and departing annually, it is one of the largest airport hubs to the Argentina area. It is located 14 miles from Buenos Aires and is referred to as the Ezeiza International Airport by locals.
History
The Ministro Pistarini International Airport was given its name after the politician Juan Pistarini. The facility was constructed in 1945 and completed in 1949 and was one of the largest projects overseen by President Juan Peron. At the time of its construction it was considered one of the largest airports in Latin America and it was the third largest airport in the world. In 1997, the airport closed runway 05/23 and it is no longer used for larger aircrafts (only or general parking and refueling for planes). The airport is most commonly known for the Ezeiza massacre, which took place in the airport in 1973.
