Guadalajara Miguel y Costilla International Airport (GDL)

As the third ranked busiest airport in Mexico, Guadalajara Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International airport serves over 7 million passengers each year. Located 12 miles south of Guadalajara, the airport serves as a hub to Volaris and AeroMexico Connect and also is a secondary for AeroMexico. It serves many airlines each year including American and domestic airlines as well as charters.

History

The airport is named after the man responsible for beginning the battle that resulted in Mexico achieving freedom from Spain, Miguel Hidalgo. Guadalajara Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International Airport was opened to the public in 1966. It was originally opened with two terminals and two runways, but underwent a large expansion project to double its capacity as it outgrew the demand at the time.

  • Financial Services - Three banks and ATMs are available for access to funds while a Bureau de Change and post office are available for currency exchange.
  • Luggage Services - There are no luggage facilities at this airport.
  • Internet Facilities - Several WiFi hot spots are available, mainly in the local eateries.
  • Car Rental Services - Travellers looking to rent a car can choose between Europcar, Hertz, Budget and Avis.
  • Restaurant Services - Several restaurants are located throughout the airport with some remaining open 24 hours a day. Travellers can take advantage of bars located throughout the airport as well.

  • Other Services - Business facilities are available, as are facilities for the handicapped.

Short and long-term parking solutions are available outside the terminal. In addition, travellers can park in a lot that is adjacent to the airport's hotel.

Surrounding Area

To get to their destination, travellers can take advantage of taxis and buses located outside the airport, or rent a car.

Stepping outside of Guadalajara International Airport, travellers will immediately see why this area of Mexico is so popular. It is full of culture and history and features many different museums for exploration. One such museum that travellers should visit is the Western Museum of Archaeology. Originally serviced as the Augustinian Recollect Convent, the building was torn down and renovated in 1891. It served as the headquarters to Military Zone XV and later became the Western Museum of Archaeology.

Travellers who love to take in art will appreciate the many wonders that there are to see in Guadalajara and the surrounding area. The Source Olympic is an attraction that features a sculpture that was created in 1968 as a tribute to the lands where the Olympics were co-hosted. It is a beautiful scene during the day, but it comes alive at night as it illuminates, also illuminating the surrounding fountain.

Several other sculptures and monuments can be found throughout the city upon exploration, offering visitors an insight into Guadalajara's vast history.
