Information and Travel Guide for Hannover-Langenhagen Airport Hannover-Langenhagen Airport, Germany (HAJ)
Hannover is the capital of the German state, Lower Saxony, and is home to the Hannover-Langenhagen Airport. This airport is the country's ninth largest and sees an average of 5 million travellers a year. While it struggles to attract lower cost airlines, it is one of the only German airports open around the clock, a factor that helps it retain a significant share of tourist traffic.
History
An airfield in Hannover was replaced in 1952 by what is now Hannover-Langenhagen Airport and located in the city of Langenhagen. The initial capabilities of the airfield were doubled in 1973 with the addition of two modern terminals. The compact design of these (Terminals A and B) influenced the Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport and they are still used today. Further additions to the airport, adding two further terminals, allow it to serve up to 33 aircraft simultaneously. The airport can also handle craft as large as the Boeing 747 at its three primary terminals with the fourth, Terminal D, being used solely by the Royal Air Force and supplying the British troops in Northern Germany.
