History

The island on which Hong Kong International Airport is located was constructed for the purpose in the 1990s. Prior to its development, the Kai Tak Airport (the colloquial name of the former Hong Kong International Airport) was positioned in the overcrowded Kowloon City District and had only one runway. Expansion was nearly impossible and, as air traffic was continuously expanding as Hong Kong developed a more prominent international presence, the Airport Core Programme included in its efforts the construction of a more modern, expandable airport.

The opening in 1998 just missed the official handover of sovereignty from Great Britain to the People's Republic of China but, even completion by that date represented an incredible feat of construction for such a project. The rush of the construction led to some technical problems as the airport tried to quickly get up to speed with current computer and technological standards. But, within six months, the bugs were eliminated and further expansion and the addition of Terminal Two saw no similar issues.

Hong Kong International Airport offers three parking garages. One of the three is available for long-term parking. Short-term parking is available at all locations. Rates for long-term parking begin at 144 Hong Kong Dollars daily. Short-term parking is 8 Hong Kong Dollars per hour. The airport is easily accessed by car, taxi, bus and rapid transit.
