Local and international tourists take flights that arrive and/or depart through Ibiza Airport. It is estimated that up to 95% of people who go to or depart from the island take flights to and from this terminal. In 2011, the overall traffic volume of the airport included more than 5.6 million passengers through about 61,800 flights.

Ibiza Airport is the island's main communications and transportation artery. Its facilities serve not just Ibiza but also the nearby island of Formentera. It is located just about 7.5 kilometers to the southwest of Ibiza Town. As expected, airport traffic is influenced by the tourism season. About 85% of all passengers come during the peak season from May to October. But it offers mainland and inter-island scheduled flights all year round. There are flights that connect to primary business hubs in the country like Madrid, Barcelona, and Palma de Mallorca.

History

The site of Ibiza Airport was first used as a temporary military hub in the years of the Spanish Civil War. It first operated as a domestic and international airport in 1949 but was shut down in 1951. In 1958, Ibiza Airport was re-opened amid robust development of tourism across the Balearic Islands. In the subsequent decades, the airport has undergone significant expansion and improvements. In the later years of the 1990s, it generated a record traffic of 3.6 million passengers. Since then, traffic has grown each year.

Services and Amenities

Ibiza Airport is not a huge air terminal. Thus, there are only seven stores, which can be found on the first level of the building. The stores mostly sell local products, souvenirs, and food items. For travel shoppers, Aldeasa Duty Free Shop is open 24/7. For eating and drinking, there are several cafes, snack bars, and fast food restaurants. There are eight Internet access points through Wi-Fi in the terminal.

Parking & Transportation

The car park is conveniently located across the terminal. Any vehicle can park in designated places (Blue Zone) when picking up or dropping off passenger/s. That is free of charge but the car can only stay for 15 minutes. If picking up or dropping off will take longer, the vehicle can take any of the 500 parking slots in the P1 parking area. The first 30 minutes is free. Parking fee costs euro 0.90 per hour afterwards.

Taking the public transport from the airport will never be a problem. Every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., a bus leaves going to the main bus terminal in Ibiza Town. From there, there are other bus lines going to other parts of the island. Taxis are available right in front of the main Arrivals Hall. In the same area are offices of major car rental firms for tourists who prefer to rent a car.

Security

The Security Forces and private security guards take care of security and safety in this Spanish airport. All passengers are required to pass a security check before going to the boarding area. They will go through the metal detector while their luggage and other items will be subject to X-ray inspection. Ibiza Airport complies with the standard regulations set by the European Commission covering aviation security, restrictions, and prohibitions for specific items.

The nearest hotels to the airport are located at Playa d'en Bossa, which is situated east of Ibiza Airport. Two of the most popular in the area for tourists are Sirenis Hotel Club Goleta and Aparthotel Club Garbi. Costs for booking accommodations at the hotels may vary depending on the season and demand, which is typical in tourism spots like Ibiza. But tourists can always book online to check out some other hotels that may offer huge discounts and more reasonable rates.

All travellers are expected to abide by standard aviation security and safety measures. Travelling to Ibiza is like travelling to any other international destination. Check the luggage weight capacity set by the airline before flying to make sure your things do not exceed limits so you can avoid hefty fees and penalties. Carry all necessary medicines and put them into your handbag where those can be easily and quickly accessed when needed especially during the flight. Lastly, bring cash as it may be easier and less costly to find money changers than to locate ATMs that may accept transaction with your bank.
