Information and Travel Guide for Larnaca International Airport Larnaca International Airport (LCA)
The Larnaca International Airport is located directly next to the Larnaca Salt Lake and is only three miles away from Larnaca's city center. Taking on more than five million passengers each year, this hub sees more than its share of travellers for only having one terminal. During peak travel times, Larnaca is exceptionally busy and can often have long delays.
History
Larnaca International Airport was constructed at the end of 1974 when Cyprus officially became the Republic of Cyprus. When it opened in 1975 it had limited resources and a very small facility. Today, Larnaca is used as a transportation hub for flights that go in between the Middle East and Europe. As one of the major tourist destinations for travellers going in between those countries, Larnaca had to begin an expansion in 1988. The new terminal was complete to take on more domestic and international flights and the airport has a trendy, modern feel.
Services and Amenities
Larnaca may be a smaller airport, but it carries some of the same accommodations and amenities that larger hubs are capable of. Some of the amenities include, but are not limited to:
Cash and financial services
Currency exchange
Lost-and-found luggage services
Restaurants (sit-down and fast food)
Business center that includes faxing, internet and conference rooms
A 6,000 square meter shopping area with local and duty-free retailers
Free Wi-Fi throughout the facility
Parking
There are 1,000 car parking spaces located at the facility. With no long-term parking, travellers will have to take local transportation to and from the airport or use one of the long-term parking centers off of the airport grounds. Parking is paid for by the hour or daily, depending on the stay.
Security
During peak travel times the airport will have significant delays. Those who are worried about making a connection flight should plan and ensure they have enough time in between flights in case of delays. The airport is constantly going through development and with its friendly staff, most travellers have reported a pleasant experience, even with the longer wait times in customs.
Surrounding Area
The best way to get around town after leaving the Larnaca International Airport is by bus or train. Once in town there are a plethora of restaurants and hotels for travellers to choose from. Cheaper hotels are located away from the airport and closer to the city. Tourists who are new to the area are encouraged to check out the Church of St. Lazarus or the Hala Sultan Trekke garden. Both of these are significant to the Republic of Cyprus and European history. Those who want to go to the beach can enjoy the Larnaca Seafront area, which includes clean beaches, safe surf and optimum coastal weather in comparison to other European locations. Since the airport is located only three miles away, most travellers find themselves purposely booking a day-long layover to enjoy the area before heading back to their real destination.
