Information and Travel Guide for Kansas City International Airport Kansas City International Airport (MCI)
The Kansas City International Airport is located 15 miles northwest of the business district in Kansas City. It is a decent-sized airport, seeing over 10 million passengers each year.
Despite the fairly small size, this airport has consistently been ranked in the top 5 airports in North America for several years. The unique thing about this airport is that it has always been a civilian airport. It has never served military purposes.
History
The Kansas City airport was built after the Great Flood of 1951 because the flood destroyed other airports in Kansas City. It was originally called the Kansas City Industrial Airport. After a large merger, the name was changed to Mid-Continent International Airport and IATA airport code became MCI. It was expanded again in 1966, but this did not suit the needs, either, so more had to be done with the airport yet again.
It was in 1972 that the airport was destroyed and rebuilt one more time. It was chosen as the TWA hub, and an extensive amount of money went into this plan to make the airport right. It finally took on its current name, Kansas City International Airport. Even then, though, the airport didn't seem to be large enough for the passengers.
The terminals had to again be rebuilt. Problems with the airport have been solved since. The renovation was completed in 2004. It cost quite a bit of money, but the expansion allowed enough space and services for a suitable airport.
