Information and Travel Guide for Minneapolis - St Paul International Airport Minneapolis - St Paul International Airport (MSP)
The IATA airport code for the Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport is MSP. It is a fairly large airport, seeing over 30 million customers each year. It makes over $10 billion annually in revenue, supporting much of the economy of the state.
It is made of two large terminals. The unique things is that the two airport terminals are accessed by completely different roadways, which is one reason people have to know exactly where they are going when they go to this particular airport. Luckily, they are connected by a rail service in case you make a mistake.
The airport itself is nestled right in the middle of the Twin Cities: St. Paul and Minneapolis. There are also many suburban communities around it. All are very close as well, so you don't have to go far to get to where you want to go.
History
The site of the airport was originally Snelling Speedway. The Minneapolis Aero Club purchased the Speedway and turned it into an airport, a decision that turned out to be much more profitable. The airport's first structures were built in 1920.
The second terminal was constructed in the 1960s, and over the next half a century, the airport began to see more and more passengers.
To compensate for the growth, a plan was created and implemented for improvements at the airport totaling over $3 billion. The plan was scheduled for completion in 2010, but was completed in 2005. When this happened, the Metropolitan Airports Commission started a new plan of additions that is scheduled to last until 2030.
