Portland International Airport is currently the largest airport in Oregon USA. It is a joint civic-military airport and located within Portland's city limits. It is often referred to as PDX, its IATA airport code. It also accounts for the state's 90% passenger rate and an almost 95% rate of air cargo.
History
First proposed in 1925 and named as Swan Island Airport, the airport began construction in 1926. The next year, Charles Lindbergh dedicated the new airfield even though it was not yet completed. Airport construction was completed in 1930.
In 1935, it was evident that the airport could not accommodate larger aircraft and passenger loads and an expansion project for the airport was almost impossible. This led to plans of relocating the airfield to a larger site. After its relocation, the Swan Island Airport was renamed Portland Airport. The project was completed in 1940 and served as an airfield for the United States Army Air Force during World War II.
