This airport is also known as Son Sant Joan Airport, it is Spain's third largest airport and is both public and military. It is found just east of Palma on the island of Mallorca, the capital city of the Balearic Islands. During summer it is among the busiest European airports and in 2011 served nearly 23 million passengers. Occupying over 6 square Km, the main terminal was designed by local architect Pere Nicolau Bonet, and now consists of 4 Modules, A - D.
Palma de Mallorca was first built to accommodate seaplanes in the 1920s for the island postal services. In 1938 it went temporarily to military use. By the early 1950s the runway and taxiways were improved. Increased traffic led to a new terminal being built and a public airport was made from the airbase. By the 1960s it was serving 1 million passengers per year and new construction expanded it to serve even more. The newest terminal opened in 1997.

Essential traveller services include WiFi - Moviestar provides access for a fee (Around euro 5/hr). Also there are 22 coin pay stations throughout the airport. There are many choices for food like fast food, pizza, burgers, snacks, beer and coffee. There are also 2 VIP Lounges (non-smoking). There are 15 shops spread throughout all modules. You can purchase shoes, clothes, tobacco, reading material, gifts, food, cosmetics and more, tax and duty free. There is also a pharmacy in the public zone. Wheelchairs, lifts, ramps, adapted toilets throughout the airport. Staff are available for free to assist disabled passengers. Please request when booking. There are also 24 hour medical emergency services.
Parking & Transportation
Passengers have several options, like 5 passenger parking services. These include long term parking accessible by shuttle, general parking with 4 floors, a few minutes' walk away, express parking for stays of less than 30 minutes, VIP parking (valet parking) A driver will pick up your car and deliver it to you. Private secure parking lot, and paid public parking in buildings 5a and 6a. You can also rent a car from one of seven well-known companies onsite, on the ground floor. There are private shuttles and public transport to and from the city as well as a taxi Station outside Module D. Weekend minimum fare euro 2.25/km, weekdays euro 1.95/ km.
Security measures are the same as at any major airport in the world. There are several security check-points in the airport so keep your boarding pass ready.

There are many hotels in the Palma de Mallorca Airport area, and at least 10 nearby, ranging in price from euro 20-50. Remember, Mallorca is a resort island so book before you arrive. Some are Amic Miraflores, Hotel THB El Cid, Amic Can Pastilla Playa, and Hotel Helios, to name a few.
Check-in is on the second floor, boarding is on the fourth. Passengers arriving by bus and taxi will be left at the check-in floor. Passengers arriving in a private car check-in at the terminal on the fourth floor. After getting a boarding pass, passengers go through security on the fourth floor. Surfboards, bicycles and other oversized luggage must be taken to your flights' check-in desk. Be at the boarding gate 30 minutes before departure.
