St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL)

Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is a public airport owned and managed by the city of St. Louis, Missouri. It is the state's busiest and largest airport, serving 90 destinations both worldwide and local. With 255 departures on average each day, the airport serves an average of 13 million passengers a year. The airport's designer, Minoru Yamasaki, patterned the airport after the John F. Kennedy International Airport and the Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.

History

The land on which the airport stands used to be a balloon launching base in the 1890s. The land, named Kinloch Field, was once a part of the Kinloch Park suburban development. The land, along with neighboring landmarks like the Kinloch racing track, and 170 acres of cornfield officially became the Lambert-St. Louis Flying Field in June 1920. The name was taken from Albert Bond Lambert, who was the Lambert Pharmaceuticals Corporation president, a professional award-winning golfer, and the first in the county to get a flying license. The airport became the first of its kind to be equipped with an air traffic control system.

Passengers can pass the time in the airport with ease due to its many retail shops and dining options. Its two terminals are littered with popular names like Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks and Burger King. It also has bars and sports-themed grills which serve alcoholic drinks. Retail shops include newsstands, gift shops, shoe shines, sports shops and many more. The airport has ample ATMs, money exchange facilities and vending machines for you comfort. It also offers WiFi services for $7.85 per day for 24 hours of continuous internet service.

Parking

The airport's parking services is provided by Super Park, which accommodates larger vehicles and also conducts a 24-hour shuttle service around the airport. The parking garage has four lots, plus two lots adjacent to each of the two terminals. Daily rates depend on the lot you choose and for how long you need to park for.

There are several hotels and accommodation options near the airport, with varying cost and services to fit your budget. The Hilton is located near the airport and it offers free shuttle rides to its clientele. Guests can make use of the hotel's indoor pool, coffee facilities, gym, laundry facilities, and cable TV for only around $75 per day. Guests may also consider the Hampton Inn by Pear Tree lane. The rooms are furnished with coffee makers, refrigerators, cable TVs, and microwaves. It also offer free shuttle service to and from the airport. A day at the Hampton Inn would cost an average of $100 per day.

Security

The TSA conducts passenger screening at the designated checkpoints in the terminal. To prevent delays and to ensure that the screening process can go quickly, passengers are encouraged to have their ID on-hand for the screening. All major liquids must be declared, and other liquids may be permitted as long as it follows the 3-1-1 rule. Although the TSA assures that the screening does not take too long, it is better that passengers arrive at the airport around two hours before their flight.
