Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) is ranked as the thirtieth in terms of passenger traffic and is currently Taiwan's biggest airport with annual passengers of 25 million. Situated in the Taoyuan County at a distance of 40 kilometers from Taipei, this airport has two terminals that are connected through Sky Train. The airport is under construction for rapid transit system that would connect the terminals and therefore provide immediate access to Taipei.
The destinations of the airport include domestic and international countries. The airport flights are engaged in travelling to South East Asian destinations and mainland China while they are also responsible for connecting with the other airport with Taipei namely Chiang Kai-shek International Airport.
History
The first plans for construction of this airport stemmed when the chief airport namely Taipei Songshan Airport was unable to meet passengers demand due to congestion. The airport was officially opened in 1979 under the supervision of the government and was labeled as one of the ten major projects in regards to construction. The name of the airport goes after the President Chiang Kai-shek.
Services and Amenities
The airport offers facilities pertaining to communications such as post offices and money transactions such as currency exchanges. On the fourth floor of the airport, business man can find a conference room that is equipped with basic amenities and is named as the More International Business Center and Premium Lounge. Wireless internet connection is available only within terminal 2. The airport offers vast opportunity for shopping and eating out as it has a number of duty free shops spotted across the two terminals that sells various products from different brands. Food lovers can enjoy their short stay at the airport by enjoying western and eastern food brands such as Grand Formosa Regent Taipei, Burger King and, Mr. Brown Coffee.
Parking & Transportation
A train station is located nearby and a U-Bus can transport passengers to the station. Taxis are available outside terminals whereas busses from South West side and North West side depart from both the terminals respectively. Terminal buildings have underground and surface parking areas whereby initial 30 minutes are free. The rates vary according to the parking time and the size of the vehicle with a minimum of $0.60 to $10.50 for smaller cars.
Security
Normal security protocols are followed at the airport, including screening of electronics (such as laptops) and removal of shoes and belts.
