History

Originally, the Hewannora International Airport was used as a military base in the region. Specifically, this regional Air Force base was under the direction and discretion of use by the United States Armed Forces during World War II. It was a defensive location to protect the region from attack by Germany and its allies. Following the war, the base was converted into a commercial airport with international flights. Expansion occurred after transition and is still being completed today. For that reason, renovations are common and the most recent one finished in 2011.
