History

The Honolulu International Airport was called the John Rodgers Airport. It was originally built in 1927 under this name and was the first full airport located in Hawaii. After Pearl Harbor, the airport was used strictly for military purposes.

Commercial air traffic resumed in 1946 and renamed as the Honolulu International Airport the next year. By this time, it was already one of the largest airports in the world.

In 2006, the airport started a very expensive and long-termed plan for expansion and modernization of the airport. The plan actually included all of the Hawaii airports with over a billion dollars designated for the Honolulu International Airport. The plan was to be implemented over a period of 12 years. The renovation is still in progress, one area of the airport at a time.
