Indianapolis International Airport

Indianapolis International Airport (IND)

Indianapolis International Airport is located just over 15 minutes away from downtown Indianapolis. It is a fairly small airport, serving nearly 8 million customers annually.

It does, however, have the 8th largest cargo center in the United States. It makes a contribution to Indiana's economy every year of over $3 billion. It is a very important part of the state's income.

The abbreviation for the Indianapolis International Airport is IND. This airport handles both international and domestic flights. It is set on a 1.2 million square foot complex.

One of the most interesting factors about the airport is the focus on art. There are many permanent works of art within the airport that were created specifically for their locations and will stay. The airport also occasionally features art exhibits.

The Indianapolis Airport was first created in 1931. It was built with only one terminal and the second one was not built for another 25 years. During the war, the airport was used for pilot training. It began to expand again after the war, though, when commercial flights were resumed once again. The new plan for the airport design was created in the 1970s.

The airport's third terminal was built in 2008. The third terminal was one of the first airport additions to be added to an airport and also one of the first to be opened after the September 11, 2001 attack - only two days after the attack happened. This contributed to the rapid growth of the airport over the last 7 years. It reopened in 2008 with the addition added.
