The Do's and Don'ts of the "Airport Gift"

It’s inevitable that you’re going to want to buy something at the airport. There are just too many options to choose from! And especially if you’ve got a few minutes to spare you’re not going to have to go far for some entertainment. There are a lot of restaurants if you’re hungry and even more places to shop. If you’re like most of us and get sucked in by the advertising at airports, here is Fly For Less’ list of Do’s and Don'ts concerning the "Airport Gift".

DO:

Make sure that you eat before you shop.

Eating makes you less agitated and less willing to buy something needless. If you’re hungry, aside from simply feeling uncomfortable, you can have tendencies to spend money to buy something because you feel a need to FILL something. If you’re not already craving food, then you will have a tendency to buy less because your desire for purchasing is decreased.

DON’T:

Shop if you do not need anything!

If you do not want to buy souvenirs or you don’t need something for an emergency then it’s the smartest idea to avoid the stores all together. The fact is the chances that you’ll buy something is very high, and those chances sky rocket when you actually enter the store. That’s why, if you're wanting to control your spending habits, then it would be a good ides to not even enter the store.

DO:

Window-shop all of the stores.

If you are just trying to wait until your flight takes off, then it's a good idea to walk around the entire shopping area without actually walking inside the store. This is a good way to avoid an actual purchase. By actually entering a store you increase your chances of purchases exponentially.

DON’T:

Buy things you can easily purchase someplace else.

You would be amazed at the price hikes in stores at airports. If you want to get a specific gift and can find it elsewhere, not buying it at the airport should save you a lot of money. However, if you’re just getting off your flight and
need a fast gift, then buying it on the spot is the perfect place.

DO:

Plan ahead of time.

You should know, or at least have an idea of the things you are going to buy as souvenirs. So if you’ve got some things in mind that the airport offers and you’ve worked those into your budget than why not go ahead and get them? But, if you’re aimlessly walking around just thinking to yourself, “I’ve got to get something for Bill, Jan, Sue, etc, etc” you’re likely to get something that is over priced and that you don’t or they need. So, it’s always the best idea to have a plan beforehand of what you want to buy and for about how much you want to spend on it.

Airports offer a large range of retail items. Some of their products are unique to certain airports and others can be found elsewhere. However, a lot of times the airport products are very overpriced and can be found some place else at a much lower price. If you’re wanting a specific gift or just looking around remember to make your plan and stick to it!
